Star Xploration

2024/ UX Project

Disclaimer: This project is not in direct affiliation with Starship Technologies and is strictly hypothetical to provide a deeper understanding of UX skills.

Project Goal

How can we use the starship to support new students and visitors to navigate the Purdue campus effectively?

In order to get a feel for how the user base perceives starships for tourism, My team interviewed Purdue students on how they use starship, their ideas about starship touring and concerns. This allowed us to make and affinity diagram to find our main points to focus on.

Sketching

To fully flesh out the experience from app to the final destination, we sketch some rough sketches. This process helped all of us get on the same page and fine tune the basic steps of our idea.

The Idea

First a lost student would get onto the starship app, then they would choose their desired location. Then it would direct them to the closest tour point where they would locate their assigned starship by its number. Then the starship would lead the user to its desired location. Once the location is reached, the user would dismiss the starship on the app

Secondary Research

When researching for this project we focused on four main areas

-Building a connection to your university in order to increase stability

-Growing appeal for the adoption of Sidewalk Automated Delivery Robots (SADRs)

-Results, insights and potential implications that SADRs can bring about

-Aesthetics, campus atmosphere, and interpersonal interactions

Initial Concerns

-How would we tackle the issue of starships taking too long at intersections?

How would we create a distinction between food delivery starships and tour ones?

Initial Feedback

-They felt that this idea would be great for the first week of school or orientations

-This idea could help orient new freshmen and visitors around campus

Solution

Integrate Tours into the pre-existing app. This would create a tours sections that you could use to pick your location in the app

-Keeping a ‘Human in the Loop’ feature to circumvent the constant stopping of the starship by a button on app. This would override the sensors that would typically make the robot stop

Splitting the starship fleet into tours and food divisions. The tour starships would have the tour logo and have a number to set it apart

  • Creating Prototypes
  • Getting more user feedback
  • Evaluate how the starship would answer tour group questions
